Hi! My name is Alyssa McCaffrey and I am part of the Curvy Girls of Long Island, Scoliosis Support Group.( Scoliosis is the bending or twisting of the spine, which I have had since I was 7, when they found out I have a 20* curve in my back. At age 11, with a 40* curve, I was put into a brace, which is uncomfortable, tight, and can be painful. I didn't wear this brace, so I got surgery at 13 years old with a 62* curve, and now have a titanium rod in my back.
I became part of the Curvy Girls when I saw them on the HALO Awards on Teenick, in January of 2009. This group of girls support each other throughout their journey, and show words of kindness and a shoulder to lean on.
I made this video a couple of months ago, to show what we are about, and our stories. It has x-rays, pictures from our walkathon, surgery pictures, etc. The Curvy Girls now have 13 groups around the U.S. including the original Long Island group.
